First case of monkeypox detected in PH | INQUIRER.NET – The first case of monkeypox has been detected in the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Friday. DOH’s Dr. Beverly Ho said the case is a 31-year-old Filipino national who arrived from abroad last July 19. The case had prior travel to countries with documented monkeypox cases. Ho said the case was tested and confirmed positive for monkeypox through reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) done at the DOH Research Institute for Tropical Medicine on July 28. “The DOH detects the first confirmed case of monkeypox in the Philippines,” Ho said in a press briefing in Malacanang. “The case has been discharged well and is undergoing strict isolation and monitoring at home,” she added. Ho said the case is “recovering well at home”. Ho said DOH had completed its case investigation and identification of close contacts. “Ten close contacts were recorded, of which three were from the same household. All have been advised to quarantine and are being monitored by the department,” Ho said. Ho said there are no symptoms so far for the close contacts as they remain under quarantine. She said that based on guidelines, close contacts need to quarantine for 14 to 21 days upon the onset of symptoms. “The DOH assures everyone that our public health surveillance systems [can] detect and confirm monkeypox cases,” she added.
Father of Ateneo shooting suspect shot dead in Basilan | INQUIRER.NET – The father of Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol, the suspect in the Ateneo de Manila University shooting, was gunned down in Lamitan City, Basilan on Friday morning, according to the police. “Kaka-confirm lang ng Lamitan police na pinatay po iyong tatay ni Dr. Yumol kaninang mga around 6:30 to 7 a.m.,” Police Lieutenant Eirene Mazon, officer-in-charge of the regional police information office at the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, told INQUIRER.net over the phone. (We just confirmed this with the Lamitan City police. Dr. Yumol’s father was shot dead at around 6:30 to 7 a.m.) Rolando, a 69-year-old retired member of the Philippine Constabulary, was gunned down outside a store in Barangay Maligaya owned by the Yumol family. Mazon said that he was immediately brought to the Lamitan District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Lt. Col Tadzhabel Managola, chief of police of Lamitan Police Station, said the victim was shot using a caliber .45 pistol sustaining four gun shot wounds. “Kanina po… diyan po mismo sa tapat ng bahay niya, nabaril si Mr. Rolando Yumol, yung tatay ni Doc Yumol. May tama po siya na apat sa lower back, lower portion ng likod niya tapos sa harapan,” Managola said over Teleradyo. (Earlier, at the front of his residence, Mr. Rolando Yumol was shot, the father of Doc Yumol. He has four gunshot wounds in the lower portion of his back and the front part.) “Nasa labas po siya, nagwawalis-walis daw po,” Managola also said, adding the victim was alone in his residence. Robredo to receive honorary doctorate from Ateneo | PHILSTAR.COM – Former vice president Leni Robredo will be conferred an honorary doctorage degree by the Ateneo de Manila University for her contributions during her tenure as the second highest official of the land. The Ateneo de Manila Board of Trustees resolved to confer on Robredo the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Economics, honoris causa, university president Roberto Yap said on Wednesday. The conferment will take place on Aug. 27. According to Yap, honorary degrees are conferred upon those who have been recognized for making notable and invaluable advancements in their field. Yap said Robredo made remarkable contributions toward poverty alleviation despite having limited government funding. She was able to do this through programs implemented with a vast network partners, both local and international, the Ateneo president said. “Her responses to the pandemic, natural and man-made disasters as well as violations against human rights and the Philippines’ national sovereignty demonstrate a leadership that is both strategic and compassionate, qualities which we hope to form in our students, graduates and employees,” Yap said. On July 1, Robredo launched the Angat Buhay non-government organization to continue the programs she initiated when she was vice president.
