Faustino bares being out of loop on AFP changes | INQUIRER.NET – MANILA, PhilippinesResigned interim defense chief Jose Faustino Jr. on Tuesday admitted being blindsided by the abrupt change of command in the Armed Forces of the Philippines that had sparked talk of unrest in the military, prompting him to quit his post.

In a statement, the officer in charge (OIC) of the Department of National Defense broke his silence about the leadership change that rocked the uniformed services over the weekend, saying he received word only from the media about the return of Gen. Andres Centino to the top AFP post and the exit of Lt. Gen. Bartolome Bacarro.

“With utmost respect, I submitted my irrevocable letter of resignation to [President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.] on Friday … after learning only from news and social media reports that an oath of office of the new AFP chief of staff had taken place at Malacañang,” Faustino said.

Hontiveros says ‘wait and see’ local onion farmers’ harvest first before importing crop | INQUIRER.NETMANILA, Philippines — It may be best to observe the harvests of local onion farmers first before making a huge importation of the crop.

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday urged concerned government agencies to do this, pointing out that the reaping season would start soon and would even occur until April.

Department of Agriculture (DA) deputy spokesman Rex Estoperez previously said that the onion harvesting season will start in mid-January and would peak in mid-February to May.

Nevertheless, the DA had authorized the importation of at least 21, ooo metric tons (MT) of onions – 17,100 MT of fresh red onions and 3,960 MT of fresh yellow onions – in a bid to “address the supply gap prior to peak harvest in 2023 and to stabilize the continuous increase in the price of fresh onions in the market.”

Retail prices of onion reached P600 per kilo in the market.

Communities urge Japan aid agency to divest from Davao’s waste-to-energy facility | PHILSTAR.COMMANILA, Philippines — Communities opposing a waste-to-energy facility in Davao City called on the Japan International Cooperation Agency to divest from the project, saying the incinerator will not only pose threats to the health of residents but also to the city’s rich biodiversity.

The local government of Davao City approved the plan to construct a P2.5 billion WTE facility, funded by a Japanese loan, to address the city’s waste crisis.

The WTE incinerator will be built on a 10-hectare property in Barangay Biao Escuela in Tugbok District and it will be close to a school, agricultural lands and the relocation site of the affected communities.
