Quezon governor protests reports toxic ‘lambanog’ was province’s product | INQUIRER.NET – The governor of Quezon protested reports saying the toxic lambanog, or coconut wine, that had killed several people and sent dozens others to hospitals was a product of the province. “The provincial government is very protective of our lambanog industry. We won’t tolerate unscrupulous local producers around,” Suarez said in a phone interview on Wednesday (Dec. 25). He recalled that when news broke out about the series of deaths of lambanog drinkers, he immediately ordered the police to stop the selling of the alcoholic drink in Quezon.
‘Silent night?’: Bishop calls for prayer after Christmas eve killing in Navotas mission station | PHILSTAR.COM – Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David on Wednesday took to Facebook to call for prayer of consolation and hope after a killing of a construction worker in one of their mission stations in Navotas. In his post, David shared that 32-year-old construction worker Ryan Cuarteros was shot and killed inside his home in one of their mission stations in Tangos North, Navotas just before midnight. According to the bishop, Cuarteros was shot dead by two men wearing bonnets who forced their way into their home. The suspects allegedly wanted to take the victim but his wife held on to him. “Unable to take their target, the men just shot and killed Ryan before his wife, not even giving him the chance to celebrate Christmas with his family,” the bishop shared.
CHR seeks end to all forms of violence | Manila Bulletin – The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has fervently wished for an end to the killings and violence in the country, not only during the Holiday Season but also in the succeeding years. In its Christmas message, the CHR exhorted the public to be relentless in facing the world with lots of hope in the future. The CHR also wishes an end to all forms of violence and the immediate arrest of all those involved in the crime. Likewise, it wishes that the government starts focusing its attention on other woes like poverty and human rights violation.
‘Ursula’ batters Southern Luzon, Visayas | The Manila Times – Typhoon “Ursula” has maintained its strength as it traversed the Visayas on Christmas Day, the state-run weather bureau said. Alert Signal 3 was raised over three areas in Southern Luzon and one in Western Visayas. Signal 2 is up in seven areas in Southern Luzon and two in Western Visayas. Signal 1 also remained in five areas in Luzon and three in Western Visayas. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) last spotted Ursula 15 kilometers south-southwest of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro as of 4 p.m. It was carrying maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph. It was moving westward at a speed of 20 kph. Ursula maintained its strength as a typhoon despite making landfall seven times over the past 24 hours. On Christmas Eve, Ursula made landfall over Salcedo, Eastern Samar at 4:45 p.m.; Tacloban City, Leyte at 7:30 p.m.; and Cabucgayan, Biliran at 9:15 p.m.
