Philippines to endure extreme heat until mid-May | PHILSTAR.COM – MANILA, Philippines — Unusually hot weather in the Philippines was expected to last until mid-May, a forecaster said Sunday, after the temperature hit a record high in the capital Manila.
Extreme heat has scorched Southeast Asia in recent days, prompting thousands of schools to suspend in-person classes and authorities to issue health warnings.
In the Philippines, many people flocked to air-conditioned shopping malls and swimming pools for relief from the relentless heat.
“This is the hottest I’ve ever experienced here,” said Nancy Bautista, 65, whose resort in Cavite province near Manila was fully booked due to the hot weather.
“Many of our guests are friends and families. They swim in the pool to fight the heat.”
The temperature in Manila hit a record high of 38.8 degrees Celsius (101.8 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday with the heat index reaching 45C, data from the state weather forecaster showed.
The heat index measures what a temperature feels like, taking into account humidity.
The months of March, April and May are typically the hottest and driest time of the year, but this year’s conditions have been exacerbated by the El Nino weather phenomenon.
“All places in the country, not necessarily just Metro Manila, are expected to have hotter temperatures until the second week of May,” Glaiza Escullar of the state weather forecaster told AFP.

Background of Chinese students being checked | PHILSTAR.COM – MANILA, Philippines — Police are conducting background checks on Chinese students in Cagayan province amid rumors they could be spies or are part of sleeper cells for the Chinese military.
Col. Jean Fajardo, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson, said that in coordination with other concerned government agencies, they are keeping tabs on the Chinese students, who the Bureau of Immigration said number about 400.
“The PNP is working with other security forces to at least do background checks on the Chinese students in Cagayan,” she said at a news forum.
Fajardo defended the move to monitor the activities of the Chinese nationals, citing national security concerns.
There are two Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites in Cagayan – the Naval Base Camilo Osias in Sta. Ana municipality and the Lal-lo Airport in Lal-lo.
Fajardo said they have not received reports on involvement of Chinese nationals in illegal activities in Cagayan.
But she stressed this should not stop authorities from monitoring the activities of the foreigners.
Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos, for his part, said there is a need to look into the alleged “discrepancies” in the data on the supposed influx of Chinese students in Cagayan province.

2 cops catch police spouses allegedly having sex in parked car | INQUIRER.NET – MANILA, Philippines — Two police officers are facing adultery and concubinage complaints after their spouses — who are also law enforcers — caught them allegedly having sex in a vehicle at a mall parking lot in Laguna, according to police.
In a report on Sunday, the Laguna Police Provincial Office (PPO) said the two complainants caught their partners allegedly having sex inside a parked vehicle along Barangay Canlubang in Calamba City around 10 a.m. on April 25.
Police investigators said the police officers wanted to confront their spouses, but the car-riding suspects tried to hit their partners before attempting to escape from the area.

Cop dies after allegedly being shot by 7-year-old son in Negros | INQUIRER.NET – BACOLOD – A policeman was shot and killed by his 7-year-old son while he was fighting with his live-in partner at their house in Purok Eba, Barangay Andres Bonifacio, Sagay City, Negros Occidental on Saturday, April 28.
Staff Sgt. Lernie Luntayao Alacha, 44, was allegedly shot by his son using a 9-mm Glock 17 service firearm while in a fight with his live-in partner in their bedroom.
The incident was also witnessed by the couple’s 12-year-old adopted son.
While the policeman was having lunch with the suspect and the adopted son at their dining area, tension arose when he discovered numerous followers engaging with his live-in partner in her TikTok account, a police report said.
“This sparked jealousy and led to a heated argument between the couple, culminating in the victim expressing thoughts of self-harm. In a desperate attempt to intervene, the live-in partner grappled with the victim, leading to a struggle inside their room,” the report said.
Triggered by the escalating conflict, the 7-year-old retrieved his father’s service firearm and shot him on the left side of his neck resulting in his instantaneous death, the report added.
