NBI: One soldier in Jolo incident with police shot eight times | PHILSTAR.COM – The National Bureau of Investigation found that one of the four soldiers killed by cops in Jolo, Sulu suffered eight gunshot wounds while the two others had at least three gunshot wounds each. NBI Deputy Director Ferdinand Lavin on Thursday said that the bureau’s finished its autopsy of three of the bodies on June 30. Lavin, also NBI spokesperson and chief of forensic investigation service, said their regional office requested the bureau headquarters to conduct the autopsy.
COVID-19 cases in PH hit 38,805 with 294 new infections | INQUIRER.NET – The Philippines’ confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases climbed to 38,805 on Thursday as the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 294 new infections. Total recoveries reached 10,673 after the DOH listed another 235 recovered patients. However, 4 more lost their lives to the respiratory disease, pushing the nationwide death count to 1,274.
Lorenzana urges AFP to defuse tension, await results of NBI probe on Sulu ‘misencounter’ | Manila Bulletin – Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told the military commanders to refrain from issuing statements that could only fuel the tension among soldiers over the death of four military intelligence officers at the hands of the Jolo policemen. He also explained to the military commanders that an impartial investigation is underway to determine what really happened. The investigation is being led by the National Bureau of Investigation. “Let us not inflame the emotions of the soldiers, we do not want this to escalate some more,” said Lorenzana. Soldiers especially those assigned in Sulu are reportedly angry over the death of Maj. Marvin Indammog, commanding officer of the 9th Intelligence Security Unit; Capt. Irwin Managuelod, field service intelligence commander; Sgt. Eric Velasco and Corporal Abdal Asula. They were repeatedly shot while Indammog was explaining to the local police why they were in civilian clothes after they identified themselves as soldiers in a checkpoint in Barangay Bus-Bus.
Palace: Anti-terror bill now under ‘final review’ | The Manila Times – The controversial anti-terror bill is under “final review” by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea before it will be sent to President Rodrigo Duterte, Malacañang said on Thursday. “Nailipat na po ‘yan sa tanggapan ni (It’s now with the office of the) Executive Secretary for final review. Final approval lang po siguro ‘yan ni Executive Secretary at dadalhin na po sa lamesa ni Presidente (I think it just needs the final approval of the Executive Secretary before it reaches the table of the President),” Roque said during a virtual press briefing. “Ibig sabihin po meron nang memorandum (It means that there is already a memorandum) recommending a course of action to the President subject to final approval lang po siguro yan ni Executive Secretary(but still subject to final approval of the Executive Secretary),” he added.
Robredo visits wake of slain soldiers in Jolo shooting | PHILSTAR.COM – Vice President Leni Robredo visited the wake of three of the four soldiers killed in the shooting in Jolo, Sulu earlier this week. In a Facebook post on Wednesday night, Robredo said she visited the wakes of Maj. Marvin Indammog (39), Capt. Irwin Managuelod (33) and Sgt. Jaime Velasco (38). She was not able to visit the wake of Corporal Abdal Asula (33) as he was buried immediately following Islam tradition. “All of them are young men who died in the service of the country. It was heartbreaking to hear their stories from their respective families. They had such promising futures ahead of them,” the vice president wrote. “My heart goes out to their loved ones and the entire Philippine Army who are all grieving for their loss,” she added.
