One of the most iconic images of the Philippines is the coconut tree, they call it “Tree of Life” due to its versatile benefits and uses. Coconut oil is the most useful ingredient inside a coconut and it is proven to be one of the healthiest foods. Its benefits have become a hot topic in health and nutrition circles worldwide. Indeed, it is considered a superfood because of its numerous health benefits.
Local researchers have found that virgin coconut oil (VCO), extracted from fresh coconut meat and known to have anti-viral properties, has shown “very promising” results in the prevention and management of coronavirus (COVID-19). Since the Philippines is dubbed as the number one producer of coconut, let’s grab and take advantage of the coconut oil.
Here are some of the evidence-based health benefits of coconut oil, from Healthline:
1. Contains healthy fatty acids
Coconut oil is high in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), a type of fat that your body metabolizes differently than most other fats. MCTs are responsible for many of the health benefits of coconut oil.
2. Boost heart health
Studies show that people from around the world who ate a substantial amount of coconut have good heart health.
3. Encourage fat burning
Research notes that MCTs in coconut oil can increase the number of calories burned over 24 hours by as much as 5%. However, keep in mind that coconut oil is very high in calories and can lead to weight gain if eaten in large amounts.
4. May have antimicrobial effects
Using coconut oil as a mouthwash may prevent mouth infections.
5. Reduce hunger and abdominal fat
The MCTs in coconut oil can significantly reduce appetite that may reduce body weight over the long term. The MCTs are effective at reducing belly fat. Abdominal fat, the most harmful type, is linked to many chronic diseases.
6. Reduce seizures
The MCTs in coconut oil can increase the blood concentration of ketone bodies, which can help reduce seizures in children with epilepsy.
7. May raise HDL (good) cholesterol
Studies have shown that coconut oil can raise blood levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, which is linked to improving metabolic health and lower risk of heart disease.
8. Protect your skin, hair, and teeth
People can apply coconut oil to their skin, hair, and teeth. Studies suggest it works as a skin moisturizer, protects against skin damage, and improves oral health.
9. Boost brain function in Alzheimer’s disease
Studies suggest that MCTs in coconut oil can increase blood levels of ketones, potentially relieving Alzheimer’s symptoms.
As of this time, there is still no found cure for COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) still recommends self-care and healthy habits for preventing and managing the symptoms. Stay healthy and safe!
