The Philippine’s pole jumping contender has able to defy gravity and proved that he’s an athlete to watch in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
Filipino pole-vault stalwart Ernest John Obiena stepped into the moment and dialed up his speed as he clinched the gold medal in the Folksam Athletics Grand Prix in Gothenburg, Sweden, June 3.
The 25-year-old Obiena set the green lights for another international run, after moving 5.70 meters in his first attempt to secure the triumphant campaign against Brazil’s Thiago Braz and Norway’s Haugen Lillefosse, who settled for silver and bronze behind their 5.65m and 5.60m tally, respectively.
“This is a great start to the 2021 outdoor season,” quipped six-foot-two Obiena in his Facebook post.
It was the third golden drive this year alone for the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) alumnus after mounting a supreme effort with 5.65m in the PSD Bank Indoor Meeting in Germany and a 5.80m stellar performance in the ISTAF Indoor Meet in Berlin, both held last February.
