Seaweed is an ancient superfood and our ancestors’ secret to health and longevity. It is a low-calorie, crunchy, salty, and highly nutritious snack. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says that seaweed is one of the best natural food sources of iodine, an essential component in thyroid hormone production. It is also known as the best source of minerals. Seaweed contains higher contents of fiber than vegetables, more protein than meat, and more calcium than milk.

Seaweed is extremely versatile and can be used in many dishes including sushi rolls, soups, stews, salads, supplements, and smoothies. According to a study, a certain species of seaweed thriving in the country’s water may have anti-cancer benefits.

Here are some of the amazing health benefits of seaweeds, from Mara Seaweed, a seaweed producer:

1. Iodine regulates the thyroid gland. The thyroid helps maintain thinking and reasoning, your metabolism, body temperature, and heart function.

2. The combination of soluble and insoluble fibers in seaweed promote good gut health and create a bulking agent that helps food move more easily through the body. Fiber also helps you feel fuller and with weight management.

3. Seaweed is one of the best vegetable sources of calcium, which is essential for building strong bones and teeth.

4. Seaweed is a good source of protein for vegetarians and vegans. It contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and muscle mass.

5. Iron is part of all body cells and helps muscles to store and use oxygen. This helps fight tiredness and fatigue. A 2-gram serving of seaweed contains almost twice as much iron as sunflower, chia, or flax seeds.

6. Potassium prevents high blood pressure and improves cardiovascular health. One serving provides 4-8% of daily recommended potassium intake.

7. Magnesium helps to maintain the normal function of the nervous system.

8. Vitamin C accelerates healing, prevents colds, and with the absorption of iron.

9. B vitamins are critical in maintaining normal metabolism, enhancing the immune system, and combating stress.

10. Seaweed contains just the right amount of sodium for the correct balance of body fluids, 85% less than in salt. Even iodized salt, which contains iodine to help address deficiencies, cannot offer the other added health benefits naturally found in seaweed.

However, too much iodine from seaweed could harm your thyroid function. For optimum health benefits, enjoy this ancient ingredient in regular but small amounts. As with anything, moderation is key.

Indeed, seaweed is a good ingredient to put into everyone’s diet. So Go add it to your daily diet and enjoy its benefits! Eat well, be well!

Stay healthy and safe!
