Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria, often referred to as blue-green algae, and voted to be the most complete natural of nutrition on earth. It’s loaded with 60% highly digestible protein, low-calorie super green with an excellent amount of vitamins, essential minerals, and antioxidants, including a high concentration of omega-6 fatty acids.

Spirulina is believed to be one of the oldest superfoods in the world,  used by people for its health-boosting properties since the time of the Aztecs, and is declared “the best food of the future” by the United Nations.

Today, spirulina is used in much the same way. You can find it as an ingredient in supplements, organic drinks, and other healthful products.

Here are loads of science-backed health benefits of spirulina:

1. Lowers Cholesterol Levels

Spirulina helps reduce serum cholesterol levels and elevates HDL (high-density lipoprotein), or ‘good’ cholesterol levels.

2. Increases Red Blood Cell Count

Apart from improving the immune system, spirulina can also be effective in improving the red blood cell count. A study conducted on senior citizens revealed that after 12 weeks of taking it, their red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels increased significantly.

3. Anticancer Potential

There have been several studies in the past couple of decades to determine the viability of spirulina against several types of cancers. It has been of interest for its chemoprotective and radioprotective potential observed in animal studies. A 2014 study published that spirulina exerted an anti-proliferative effect on pancreatic cancer, and noted its anticancer potential in the case of liver and breast carcinogenesis.

4. Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Having spirulina regularly reduces inflammation. Recent scientific studies indicate this fact. When arthritic lab rats were given spirulina, arthritis-associated inflammation was reduced to a significant level.

5. Protects Liver

Spirulina possesses liver protection properties. Studies showed that it helps in protecting liver cells from toxin damage.

6. Controls Bronchial Asthma

Spirulina is also beneficial for the control of bronchial asthma. A 2015 study has shown that administering it along with medication over the long term (daily for two months) can have a substantial effect on bronchial asthma. It is especially suitable in the case of mild and moderate asthma.

7. Strong Immune System

Spirulina is a good source of antioxidants which helps in the inhibition of free radicals, etc., along with Vitamins B6, B12, and iron which are vital for the immune system. Spirulina contains an antioxidant that has been shown to boost the body’s response “to RNA viruses including influenza and coronavirus”, according to research.

8. Weight Loss

Spirulina is also popular for its weight loss benefits. A 2016 study consisting of 40 patients who took 2g (just less than 1tsp) of spirulina for 3 months found that it significantly reduced Body Mass Index, and blood pressure and promoted weight loss.

9. Combat Iron Deficiency

Spirulina is shown to be effective in increasing iron studies and is even recommended by the World Health Organization as a high source of iron. Unlike iron supplements, spirulina does not cause any tummy troubles or constipation.

10. Healthy Brain

You can get the B Vitamins and iron you need for a healthy brain, nervous system, and psychological function from spirulina with no side effects. Post-meal brain fog and low energy disappears with spirulina too, as it is known to help balance blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.

Spirulina is indeed a superfood. Start adding it to your daily diet and enjoy its many benefits! Stay healthy and safe!
