It has been a rough first few days of October for commuters in Metro Manila as operations in the Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1 and 2 alike, and even the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) experienced technical problems back to back.
LRT-2 operations suffered the most damage after a fire broke out between stations Anonas and Katipunan just before the afternoon of October 3, with reports that say a power rectifier between the two stations had tripped.
Operations went to a halt immediately and the fire was contained at around 12:30 p.m, announced LRT-2 authorities on Twitter.
The entire train line from was closed for a full four days from October 4 to 7 after the incident to conduct investigation, leaving thousands of commuters at a loss for words and a much-needed transport system.
Partial operations have resumed today, October 8, with only 5 trains running from stations Cubao to Recto, while the Santolan, Katipunan, and Anonas stations are closed for the next six to nine months for repair.
The government, since the close on October 4, has announced and deployed buses to aid affected passengers to an alternative means of transport.
Ride-hailing application Angkas has also offered a hand to help, announcing the offer of free rides from Santolan to Recto and vice-versa on October 8 to 10, from 8 a.am. to 10 a.m. and 5p.m. to 7 p.m., via the LRT-2 line route.
“[Administrator General Renaldo] Berroya continues to request for public indulgence as he assures that LRTA will do its best to restore the full operation of the LRT-2 System within the targeted timeframe of six to nine months,” says Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) on their official statement on Facebook. The LRT-2 accommodates an average of 200,000 passengers on a daily basis through its 11 stations from Santolan to Recto
