Angat Buhay marks first anniversary | PHILSTAR.COM – MANILA, Philippines — Former vice president Leni Robredo yesterday led the celebration of the first anniversary of Angat Buhay Foundation, the non-government organization she founded and chaired after the end of her term last year.
Speaking at the gathering of volunteers and institutional partners in Taguig, Robredo highlighted the milestones achieved by the organization since it was founded.
She also expressed gratitude to volunteers and partners, noting that more work needs to be done to achieve the goals of Angat Buhay.
According to a report released by the organization, a total of 20,131 families and another 15,636 individuals across 176 communities have been supported by Angat Buhay since it was founded.
Bayanihan e-Konsulta, the foundation’s flagship telemedicine program, assisted 7,706 unique patients with the help of 285 medical volunteers and at least 1,000 non-medical volunteers.
At least 1,214 underweight and severely underweight children are also enrolled in the foundation’s nutrition program, which is present in seven sites across the country.
Angat Buhay also established 137 learning hubs to help non-readers and numeracy-challenged learners, benefitting at least 5,000 students.
It also finished the construction and turnover of dormitories in Infanta, Quezon and Camarines Norte, as well as several classrooms in Camarines Sur and Maasin, Iloilo.
More than 20,000 families affected by natural and man-made disasters from 93 displaced and affected communities were also given immediate relief and assistance and rehabilitation initiatives over the past year.

Ad agency sorry for use of stock footage from abroad in tourism launch video | PHILSTAR.COM – MANILA, Philippines — The advertising agency behind the “Love the Philippines” tourism campaign video apologized for the use of stock footage of locations outside the country, calling it “highly inappropriate.”
DDB Philippines said in a statement Sunday that while the use of non-original clips in mood videos is a standard practice in the industry, the use of foreign stock footage was “an unfortunate oversight” on its part.
“Proper screening and approval processes should have been strictly followed. The use of foreign stock footage in a campaign promoting the Philippines is highly inappropriate, and contradictory to the Department of Tourism’s objectives,” it said.
In a statement late Saturday, the DOT said that DDB had repeatedly assured the department that the originality and ownership of all materials were in order.
The controversial promotional video has already been taken down. Succeeding ad materials have yet to be produced for the campaign.

SC ruling grants seaman’s $100,000 disability claims | INQUIRER.NET – MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court has ruled that employers cannot deny a worker his disability pay even if he had not disclosed a preexisting illness that was later determined to have been unrelated to injuries that he suffered while on the job and had impaired his capacity to work.
The high court said on Friday that it ordered a manning agency and a foreign shipping line to pay a Filipino seafarer at least $100,000 in disability benefits after he was laid off for being unfit to work due to a spinal cord injury and vision problems he developed while on duty.
The June 27 ruling made public on Friday afternoon supported the disability claims of Loue Mutia, who worked as an assistant cook on the Norwegian Jade, a Bahamas-flagged cruise ship owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Inc. (NCL), where he was deployed by the Filipino-owned manning company C.F. Sharp Crew Management Inc.
The 14-page unanimous ruling by the five-member Second Division of the high court overturned separate decisions by the Court of Appeals (CA) and the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) rejecting Mutia’s disability benefit claims after suffering injuries while at work.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court pointed out that a preexisting illness, which was an ear ailment in the case of Mutia, referred to a “continuing illness or condition” diagnosed during the pre-employment medical exam.
But it noted that “there was no proof that Mutia’s ear infection still persisted” at the time of the exam and that its only finding was a “mild hearing loss.”
It also held that the “unrelatedness of Mutia’s prior ear illness and his present medical conditions negated an intent to profit from the concealment.”

Generally fair weather to prevail over PH on Monday due to high-pressure area, easterlies | INQUIRER.NET – MANILA, Philippines — The country is expected to experience generally fair and warm weather on Monday, due to the ridge of a high-pressure area (HPA) and the easterlies with chances of rain showers due to localized thunderstorms, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa)
Pagasa likewise said that the southwest monsoon or “habagat” has weakened and remains within the West Philippine Sea or far from the country’s landmass.
“Ngayong araw ay may inaasahan pa rin tayong mga isolated na pag ulan dulot ng thunderstorms,” weather specialist Aldczar D. Aurelio said in an afternoon forecast.
(Today, we still expect isolated rains caused by thunderstorms.)
“Patuloy pa rin ang epekto ng ridge of HPA at easterlies sa ating bansa kaya bukas ay inaasahan na magiging maganda o maaliwalas ang panahon maliban sa localized thunderstorms,” he added.
(The effect of the ridge of HPA and easterlies will prevail in our country, so tomorrow, good or clear weather is expected, except for localized thunderstorms.)
