Senate adopts resolution seeking SC ruling on Senate role in treaty abrogation INQUIRER.NET – The Senate on Monday adopted a resolution seeking to clarify with the Supreme Court if the concurrence of the upper chamber would be needed in treaty abrogation. During the Senate session Monday afternoon, the body adopted Senate Resolution No. 337 expressing the sense of the Senate “respectfully asking the Supreme Court to rule” if Senate concurrence would be necessary in treaty termination.
Aguirre tagged as ‘protector’ of ‘pastillas’ racket, denies accusations | PHILSTAR.COM – Columnist Ramon Tulfo tagged former Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II as the supposed protector of Immigration officials involved in the “pastillas” racket, an allegation the former DOJ chief denied. At the Senate inquiry into corruption at the Bureau of Immigration, Tulfo, citing information from whistleblower Allison Chiong, accused Aguirre of being the “protector of the syndicate” operating the “pastillas” scheme.
House committee chairmen reshuffled amid coup rumors | Manila Bulletin – The chairman of the powerful House Committee on Appropriations and head of the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) delegation were replaced Monday amid rumors of another coup d’etat for the Speakership. Removed as Appropriations panel chair was Davao 3rd district Rep. Isidro Ungab while Oriental Mindoro 1st district Rep. Doy Leachon was unseated as head of the HRET delegation. Replacing Ungab was ACT-CIS Party-List Rep. Eric Go Yap, while Kabayan Party-List Rep. Ron Salo will be taking over Leachon’s seat.
Shoppers evacuated from San Juan mall amid hostage-taking | The Manila Times – Shoppers at the Greenhills Shopping Center in San Juan were evacuated after heard gunshots were heard from inside one of the shops on Monday. A consultancy firm reported that 27 mall employees were “being held by a former security guard” who was laid off from his job.
