1Sambayan says it ‘welcomes’ Robredo’s openness to run for presidency | PHILSTAR.COM – The 1Sambayan opposition coalition on Sunday said it welcomed Vice President Leni Robredo’s openness to run as its presidential candidate in the 2022 national elections. Speaking in an interview aired over dzMM TeleRadyo, 1Sambayan convenor Howard Calleja said that the coalition was “very confident” it would have a “strong, solid slate” come the May 2022 polls. “This is a good development. We always welcome Vice President Leni’s remark that she’s open to running and that she wants a unified opposition,” he said in Filipino. The lawyer said that before crafting its final slate, the coalition would first look at the candidates’ track record and stands on various issues including the government’s pandemic response, tensions in the West Philippine Sea, and rule of law in the Philippines. It would also look at the candidates’ “capability to launch a national campaign… mentally and physically.” “There are a lot of points to consider,” he also said, adding the Robredo herself would have to go through the same process should she decide to run. Calleja said the coalition would be careful to afford possible nominees “equal treatment, transparent, open and accountable selection.” “We want to be inclusive and as participative to everybody,” he added.
Mindanao outpaces Metro Manila in new COVID-19 infections | INQUIRER.NET – A quarter of new COVID-19 cases in the country has been recorded in Mindanao, which has now outpaced Metro Manila, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said on Saturday. “Mindanao has outpaced the National Capital Region (NCR), where Mindanao contributes to about 25 percent of the cases right now. So we see that the burden of cases has shifted to other areas,” she said at an online briefing. There has also been an increase in cases in the Visayas region as well as in Northern Luzon, she added, noting that the average daily cases in the country has risen over the past two weeks from a seven-day average of 5,200 to 6,691. Vergeire attributed the rise in cases to the new COVID-19 variants, the mobility of the population, lack of compliance with health protocols, and deficiencies in detection, isolation, and treatment.
Prelate to faithful: If we love PH, choose best leaders in May 2022 polls | Manila Bulletin – A Catholic prelate has asked the faithful to choose the best leaders for the country in the May 2022 polls. “We give our best to those we love. Let us also give the best for the country if we love it,”Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila Bishop Broderick Pabillo said in a Mass in Manila, Sunday, June 6. “It’s 11 months before elections, when we will again choose our leaders. Let us give the best people for the country,” he added. The head of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on the Laity said the faithful may start looking into the characters of prospective candidates. “We look into their characters. How can they be good leaders if they are boastful, foul-mouthed, liars, vengeful, and disdainful to others?” said Pabillo. Last April, the prelate asked the faithful to start praying for good leaders in the May 2022 polls. “It is never too early to start praying now for good leaders for next year’s elections,” he said. “Now that the election is near, let us assess our leaders. Did they take advantage of their role? Are they richer in their role?” Pabillo added.
