Diokno questions shooting of Marawi siege veteran | Manila Bulletin – Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) chairman and human rights lawyer Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno on Thursday, April 23, questioned the decision of policemen implementing the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to shoot retired Army Corporal Winston Ragos near a checkpoint in Quezon City. “What led the police to point their guns at Cpl. Ragos in the first place? Was he committing or attempting to commit a crime at the time? Was he a threat to the lives of the police or other persons in the area?” asked Diokno in his latest social media posts.
6 Sayyafs killed, 8 soldiers wounded in fresh Sulu clash | The Manila Times – Security forces killed at least six Abu Sayyaf terrorists in a clash that left eight soldiers wounded in the southern Philippine province of Sulu where the military mounted fresh assault against the pro-ISIS group, officials said Thursday. Troops engaged the gunmen in a battle late Wednesday in Latih village in Patikul town, a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.
2 gun-for-hire suspects nabbed for killing of village chief | INQUIRER.NET – Two suspects in the killing of a village chair here have been arrested on Wednesday (April 22), a day after the killing. The two—Geronimo Joaquin and Alvin Carlo Aggabao–were believed to be guns-for-hire. Eranio Caleda, chief of Barangay Julian Olivas, was shot as he helped in repairing the power cable being used at a checkpoint. Caleda, 46, died in transit to hospital but was able to identify his assailants before breathing his last.
Baguio finalizing post-lockdown recovery plan | PHILSTAR.COM – Baguio City will adopt a new setup that will help it slowly move to a “new normal” amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Benjamin Magalong said during at the “Ugnayan sa City Hall” presser late Wednesday afternoon. Baguio City is eyeing three phases towards bouncing back from the economic and social disruptions brought about by the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). “We will go to mitigation, transition and recovery,” Magalong said. The city government is working with all sectors to address as many of stakeholders’ concerns as possible, the mayor said.
