‘Carina’ damages 45 schools, disrupts upcoming school opening | PHILSTAR.COM – MANILA, Philippines — At least 45 public schools across the Philippines have been damaged during the onslaught of Supertyphoon Carina (international name: Gaemi) enhanced by the southwest monsoon, impacting teachers’ and students’ preparations for the school opening five days from now.
The Department of Education on Wednesday said that as of 11 a.m., the estimated cost of the school damages so far tally to at least P308.5 million.
The 45 schools that sustained damages from the torrential rains are spread across eight regions, namely CAR, Region 1, Region 2, Region 3, Region 4-A, Region 4-B, Region 6 Region 8.
The combined effects of the tropical storm and the southwest monsoon dumped a record amount of rainfall on Wednesday, triggering emergency rescue operations as floodwater submerged houses and sinked vehicles in major thoroughfares.
Metro Manila has been placed under a state of calamity.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, heavy rainfall in Luzon is expected to continue until Friday, while Carina is projected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Thursday morning and make its final landfall in Taiwan.
Calls to shift to the traditional academic calendar came after teachers and students expressed health concerns with holding classes during the hot months of March to May. However, climate advocates have warned that extreme weather events remain a year-round threat.

Japanese boxer disowns win vs Filipino foe: ‘I believe I lost’ | INQUIRER.NET – MANILA, Philippines—In a genuine class act, Japanese boxer Keita Kurihara disowned his victory over Filipino journeyman Renan Portes last Monday at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
What seemed an ordinary eight-round boxing match took a bizarre turn after an emotional Kurihara addressed the crowd and boldly said “I didn’t win this fight” shortly following the announcement of his split decision win.
Two Japanese judges scored it, 78-74, for Kurihara while the other also had it, 78-74, but in favor of Portes.
A video on Facebook that has gone viral also shows a regretful Kurihara apologizing to Portes while inside the Bukidnon native’s locker room.

PNP removes all 75 cops from Sara security detail | INQUIRER.NET – MANILA, Philippines — The chief of the Philippine National Police on Tuesday confirmed the removal of police officers from the security detail of Vice President Sara Duterte, saying they were transferred to beef up street patrols, especially in Metro Manila.
Earlier in the day, Duterte released a statement saying the PNP had issued a “Notice of Relief” to 75 personnel posted under the Office of the Vice President (OVP).
“I want to assure the public that [the PNP] order will not affect my work in the Office of the Vice President,” Duterte said. “Our work will continue in delivering the services to our fellow Filipinos—especially in the rural and underserved communities in the country.”
“I do hope, however, that with this latest directive of the Chief PNP, we hear [fewer] cries from the people regarding the proliferation of drugs in the country, and that even fewer shall fall victim to various criminal activities,” she said.
