Philippines off to a good start in the 32nd SEA Games with 11 golds

Team Philippines is on the verge of another triumphant campaign as the country got on the medal tally early in the 32nd edition of Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with a quick work of 11 golds in the said biennial meet.
Jiu-jitsu athlete Kaila Napolis sealed the country’s first gold after besting her competitors in Women’s ne-waza G1 52kg. category. Kim Mangroban successfully defended her crown in the women’s duathlon, clocking 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 25.3 seconds.
The country also dominated the obstacle course racing event with Mark Julius Rodelas and Precious Cabuya securing the men’s and women’s obstacle course racing as both toppled their regional rivals to snatch two golds. In the team event, Milky Mae Tejares, Mecca Cortizano, Sandi Menchi Abahan, and Marites Nocyao scored gold in the women’s relay while Ahgie Radan, Elias Tabac, Mervin Guarte, and Jose Mari de Castro pulled off a convincing golden victory in the men’s relay.
Other gold medalists include Angel Gwen Derla in her kun bokator women’s bamboo shield form quest, Sakura Alforte in women’s karate individual kata, Annie Ramirez on her victorious jiu-jitsu ne-waza nogi 57kg., Jamie Lim dominates in the Karate women’s 61kg., and Matthew Hermosa, Inaki Lorbes, Kira Ellis, and Erica Burgos with their golden splash in the aquathlon mixed relay. As of 4 pm on May 7, the country ranks second in the overall standing with a total of 40 medals: 11 golds, 14 silvers, and 15 bronze. The SEA games will run from May 5-16.
