Carlo Angelo Garces is a costume player — or cosplayer to the clueless. But with no cosplay events to attend, he decided to ‘cosplay’ while in quarantine. Carlo wears his Spider-Man costume while doing his daily tasks such as picking up his groceries.
His latest outing that caught the eyes of many was on Father’s Day when he put on a Scarlet Spider-Man costume and a greeting dangling from his neck. This was not the first time that the public has taken notice of this superhero cosplayer.
Carlo has always been going around town wearing his costumes. Once, he wore his White Power Ranger costume to the grocery thanking the frontliners. He was then featured on 24 Oras. Carlo said that he wanted to thank the “real superheroes” of the pandemic.
Carlo also caught the attention of Yahoo News when he wore his Spider-Man costume to relay his thanks to frontliners and of One Page News when he wore a Filipino-inspired Spider-Man costume to celebrate the Philippine Independence Day while doing his grocery.
When asked how many costumes he owns, Carlo said he has “over 70 costumes, half of which are Spider-Man suits.” The public has not even seen half of Carlo’s costumes, so there will be more appearances to expect.
Carlo’s decision to go out in costume while doing his daily tasks was his response to the pandemic.
“The pandemic, coupled with the lockdown, was quite depressing. We need to go out with masks, so I thought ‘why not spread good vibes and protect yourself at the same time? Hence, my superhero grocery shopping adventures.”
Carlo wants to share positivity in his messages during these daunting times and it seems that wearing his costumes has helped. His messages – Treat our frontliners as heroes, give importance to our Independence Day, and let fathers know that they are their children’s real heroes.
“No matter how hard the situation is there is still hope. Protect yourself from the virus by wearing masks or helmets.”
With superhero costumes, Carlo attracts the attention of both the young and the adults.
“Cosplay gives us good vibes despite hard times. It turns you into a character you love. It brings fun that can ‘infect’ others, making it all the more worthwhile and fulfilling.”
It’s not every day that we see a superhero doing his groceries, but if you do, perhaps it is Carlo Angelo Garces spreading positivity and giving us reasons to smile and — even just for a second — forget the problems we are facing as a community.
“We are all superheroes. We have responsibilities being required of us. Superheroes bring hope and all is not lost if we continue to have faith and to believe.”
