Netflix just posted on their official Facebook page a peek into the upcoming animated adaptation of the popular and award-winning Philippine graphic novel series called Trese written by Budjette Tan and illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo.
Trese the graphic novel revolves around the life and cases of detective Alexandra Trese. She battles the criminal underworld of Manila that is set in a parallel world where mythical creatures such as tikbalang, aswang, and mananaggal exist. Alexandra Trese is tasked to keep the peace between the different creatures and humanity.
Netflix posted the titular character clad in black and overseeing the high-rise buildings of Manila.
In another picture, Alexandra is seen gripping her kris blade named Sinag.
Max Scoville of IGN, an American video game and entertainment media website, commented that the anime is like a Filipino Men in Black, that iconic 90s movie.
Budjette Tan tells Coconuts Manila, “If you’re a fan of the book, I think you’ll enjoy it and still be surprised even though you know what’s going to happen in the story.”
The Netflix adaptation of Trese is produced by Filipino-American director and storyboard artist Jay Oliva. He has worked on the storyboards of Teen Titans, Justice League, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. He also directed the animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Rises.
Trese will expose the mythical and criminal underworld on Netflix in 2021.
