Many Filipino healthcare workers dream of going to and working in the United States. But do you have what it takes?
Here is a step-by-step recommendation by Arlene Krysiak, program coordinator of Catholic Health Systems in New York, USA:
1. Prepare your budget
When applying for healthcare work abroad especially in the United States, prepare your budget because obtaining many important documents, taking examinations, and among others can cost you.
2. Take the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE)
To practice medicine in the United States, you need to obtain a license. Applicants who are trained outside the US are required to take the test, which is scored based on the same standard as US medical school students.
Applicants may also go to the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates’ website (https://www.ecfmg.org/) to assess whether or not they’re ready to take the USMLE.
3. Get good and positive letters of recommendation
The letter of recommendation should come from either the university faculty or colleagues who can attest to your experience, accomplishments, and skills. This letter is also your chance to provide in depth information that is not in your resume.
4. Participate in healthcare related volunteer opportunities
Although you’ll benefit from almost any type of volunteer experience, it’s best to find at least healthcare-related opportunities that can boost your curriculum vitae (CV). With many competitive applicants, your CV should stand out.
