While the use of medical marijuana, also known as medical cannabis, has yet to be fully recognized in the Philippines, it is already legal in many parts of the world as a treatment for pain, nausea, and other conditions. But is Marijuana a safe and effective medicine? Experts weigh in on this issue.

Medical marijuana has side effects but they are much less dangerous and easier to manage, Dr. Angel Gomez tells Ang Pinoy, adding that it must only be used for medical purposes. Some of its reported side effects are depression and dizziness.

“Most people with chronic pain rely on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to manage their pain. However, it has long-term side effects on kidneys,” Dr. Gomez says.

On how to take medical cannabis, he says it’s up to the patient and each method works differently for different patients, but the effect is almost immediate. A patient may smoke or vaporize it, eat, or apply it on the skin, among others.

With plenty of misconceptions about the use of medical marijuana, cannabis advocate Chuck Manansala says no law in the Philippines bans its medical use.

“Ang paggamit ng marijuana bilang gamot ay hindi bawal,” Chuck tells Ang Pinoy.

Dr. Gem Mutia, meanwhile, cites a US study showing that there’s insufficient evidence to say cannabis causes mortality. United Nations recently reclassified Marijuana as a less dangerous drug.

“Never ka ma-over dose, hindi mangyayari ang nangyayari sa ibang narcotics na sinasabi na may respiratory depression. Matutulog ka lang nang malalim pero hindi titigil ‘yung paghinga mo,” Dr. Mutia explains in the Ang Pinoy interview.
